There is no such thing as failure . . .

I attended the Great Interactions Management workshop last week, which was facilitated by Craig Crowther, with many of my colleagues from across the organisation.

The day was not only a reflective look at how Great Interactions has impacted itself across the organisation, but also a chance to celebrate our success and think about where we are now and how we can continue with this innovation in practice and cultural mindset change within social care.

There were a wide range of topics discussed on the day which I found personally very thought provoking, particularly with regard to how we deal with feedback. Feedback is something we all receive regularly, be it from the people we support, our line managers or colleagues. If we receive negative feedback, do we see this as a failure on our part which can be a stumbling block to moving on with virtually anything or should we instead think: There is no such thing as failure, only feedback!

Thomas Edison – upon trying to invent the light bulb – stated; “I haven’t failed, I’ve found 10,000 ways that don’t work.”
This is obviously a very different way of thinking for us all, how easy would it have been for him to give up on an invention which changed the world and think “ah well, candles will do the job”?

How many of us feel we want to give up when we strive to give our all to the people we support only to find that we were not as successful as we had hoped? But then, the next thing we try may just win us that eye contact, that smile or simple touch.

So in all, as I left the day, I will leave you with this thought . . . If you fall off a bike, how many times do you try to get back on it the same way?
